About Color Doggy
Color Doggy is a utility for macOS to help people, including but not limited to those with color blindness, to easily identify a color they see on their screen by pressing one of the modifier keys on their keyboard (“Activation Key”). When Color Doggy is activated a window (“Magnifier”) appears with an enlarged image of the current area around the mouse pointer and the name of the closest Web Standard Color matching the colour in the center of this picture. In addition, professional users can customize Color Doggy to also display RGB, HSB, or HSL color values and easily copy these values to the clipboard (“Clipboard Feature”).
What information does Color Doggy regularly obtain and how is it used?
Color Doggy works by observing the following system events generated by user input:
- Modifier key presses
- Mouse/trackpad clicks
- Mouse/trackpad movement
Data for these events are used to:
- Decide whether the Activation Key was pressed by itself without the mouse or trackpad button being held at the same time
- If the Clipboard Feature is enabled, measure the time between presses to discover double-presses
If the Activation Key is pressed, a small portion (16 by 16 pixels) of the screen around the current position of the mouse pointer is stored in the computer’s short term memory and discarded after being used to:
- Show a enlarged version in the Magnifier
- Measure the color
The color information is used to store a history of the ten most recently measured colors in the computer’s long term memory (“Disk”) so it can be restored across restarts. This history can be cleared at any time by the user.
Additionally, if the Clipboard Feature is triggered, the color information is copied to the user’s clipboard and stored in a history of the ten most recently copied colors on Disk. Again, this history can be cleared by the user.
Color Doggy supports a range of user customizable options (“preferences”) which can be changed through its graphical user interface. These preferences are stored on Disk and include:
- Whether to launch Color Doggy automatically after the user has logged in
- Whether to show an icon in the menu bar (“Status Menu Item”)
- Which modifier key to use as the Activation Key
- What language to use in the Magnifier to display the color name
- Whether and which additional color information to show in the Magnifier
- Enabling the Clipboard Feature
- Which color information format to use when copying to the clipboard
Is there any other information obtained?
Upon first launch Color Doggy displays a helpful window to welcome new users. When a user completes this introduction the fact is stored on Disk to avoid showing the welcome window again. For an accurate depiction of the current keyboard in the welcome window, the following data is gathered:
- The hardware standard the keyboard conforms to (ANSI, ISO, GIS)
- The keyboard type (with or without numeric keypad)
- The system’s current appearance setting (Light or Dark)
To translate the user interface the current list of languages set in macOS is processed.
Is any of the gathered information transmitted over the network?
Color Doggy itself does not transmit any information over the network.
Do third parties see and/or have access to information obtained by Color Doggy?
When the user invokes Color Doggy’s online documentation from the Help menu a web address is visited in the currently selected standard browser (e.g. Safari). The following data is sent as part of this address to show relevant information:
- Current language
- Current Color Doggy application version
